Researchers analyzed data from 42 monitoring sites spanning 15 years and found average species richness rose by 18 percent in areas with active protection measures.

The study attributes gains primarily to reduced grazing pressure and targeted restoration of native vegetation. Mammal populations, including desert bighorn sheep and kit foxes, showed the strongest recovery, with occupancy rates increasing at 27 sites. Bird species such as the cactus wren and Bendire's thrasher also expanded their ranges within protected boundaries. Soil crust stability improved by 22 percent on average, supporting greater plant diversity and reducing erosion during seasonal rains.
Remote sensing combined with ground surveys confirmed that invasive grass coverage declined in 65 percent of monitored plots after removal programs began in 2012. Water retention features installed at 19 locations further aided seedling establishment during drought periods. The report notes that zones with collaborative management involving local ranchers achieved faster results than strictly exclusionary approaches.

Authors emphasize that continued funding for monitoring remains essential to sustain these trends. Climate models project increased aridity in the region, making protected areas critical refuges for species shifting their ranges northward.
